At
Lonesome Lake Hut, I tied Muffin up on the porch of the dining room
and went for a short rest and to buy a t-shirt. Dogs aren't
officially allowed inside the huts, but sometimes they overlook the
rules if a dog is well-behaved and no one else minds.
After
buying a new hut t-shirt and cap, and talking to the croo for a few minutes,
I untied Muffin and we resumed our hike. The last time I came this
way - in the snow - I had a lot of trouble locating the start of the Fishin' Jimmy Trail, but this time I expected to start down the
trail without a hitch. Unfortunately, the same thing happened - I
couldn't spot a clear path through the open woods. Finally, I
figured out that the trail did not head off directly into the woods
in back of the sign, but continued along the edge of the clearing a
short distance before angling up a gentle slope. Problem solved!
When
we reached the first set of pinned steps on the Fishin' Jimmy Trail,
I paused to ponder my accident here when the steps and ledges were
covered with snow and ice. On the way down from North
Kinsman, my crampons lost their grip on a thin coating of ice,
and I slid down the steep slope into a tree, bruising my leg.
The
higher we climbed, the worse the blackflies got. I was seriously
beginning to regret forgetting the bug repellent.
When we reached the
Kinsman Pond Campsite, it seemed like a great time for a brief rest.
Unfortunately, the blackflies had other ideas. I assumed that the
breeze blowing off the pond would help keep these insufferable pests
away, but the air was annoyingly still. Needless to say, our rest
was considerably briefer than I had hoped. |
